Student/Parent Handbook & Commonly Asked Questions

Welcome! Established in 2018, Beach Ballet is a fun and positive environment offering classes in creative movement, pre-ballet, ballet, and contemporary. Our goal in this handbook is to give you as much information as possible so you know how our program operates.

CONTACT INFORMATION
We are very fortunate to have an assistant ready to help with anything you might need, just ask! You may also email questions to beachballet98631@gmail.com. Our yearly calendar with the studio closures and events will be available on our website at www.beachballet98631.com

BEACH BALLET ETIQUETTE
Our classes are like any other learning environment, there are expectations to enhance everyone’s experience. Students need to arrive on time, be properly dressed, and ready to have fun and to learn. Please remove jewelry and make sure hair is secured away from face preferable in a ballet bun (longer hair). Water bottles only in the waiting area, no gum or food please. Also, no street shoes allowed on the floor because dancing on leftover rocks and mud clumps is no fun for anyone! Our location is in the hub of Long Beach shopping with lots to do during your child’s class. Take in the local attractions, enjoy a meal, and explore our wonderful downtown area.

ADDITIONAL ETIQUETTE
The waiting area is very small and open to the classroom so you can hear and see everything happening on the floor. However, the teacher and students can hear and see you too! Please be courteous and quiet when inside the building. If you have siblings with you we encourage you to take the opportunity to go shopping at the nearby stores during class time or use the play area quietly. This will ensure your child gets the most out of their classes without the distractions.

POLICIES AND WAIVERS
Upon enrollment with Beach Ballet, students and families automatically agree to our studio policies and waivers. Waivers are policies available when you register for class. You can also get a copy from the website.

DROPPING A CLASS
Because Beach Ballet offers classes in two 19-week sessions, we ask that you “stick it out” for that time period. It is not uncommon for a young dancer to sit and watch a few classes and then, like magic, they jump right in and participate! If for some reason at any time during the dance session it is necessary for your dancer to withdraw from their class, a written note must be given. We require a 30-day notice to remove your child from the class. This can be emailed to beachballet98631@gmail.com or submitted in person. We will gladly refund you the balance of classes that will not be taken.

TUITION PER SESSION
Beach Ballet processes tuition one-week prior to the start of the session date. If you prefer to set up monthly installments, there is an extra $5 per month charge; payment must be received by the 5th of the month. We will set up credit/debit card payments upon registration through square-up app.

CAN I PAY BY CASH OR CHECK
YES! Payments may be mailed to Beach Ballet/Cheryl Cochran, PO Box 1293, Long Beach, WA. 98631 or placed in the payment drop box located in the waiting area. All returned checks are subject to a $35 returned check fee.

IS THERE A REGISTRATION FEE?
Yes. The annual registration fee is $30 and includes a Beach Ballet t-shirt. Each additional sibling is $20.

WHY IS THERE A DRESS CODE?
If your child has ever played team sports, this should be easy to understand. You wouldn’t play soccer in the wrong color jersey, right? What about your cleats? You need them too! How about your hair? Pulled back out of your face to play a good game. When you enroll your child in dance you can expect they will be required to have certain dress for their classes. Especially Ballet classes, we require a leotard, tights and shoes in every class (see flyer). If students come to ballet without tights, they may go bare legged or wear pink or black leggings.

WHEN DOES THE SEASON BEGIN?
We have two sessions of dance.
Session one: Fall/Winter Session—September 9th to February 1
Session two: Winter/Spring Session—February 3 to June 21

HOW LONG DOES THE SESSION RUN?
Each session includes runs 19 weeks with performances at Christmas and late spring.

HOW EARLY CAN I DROP OFF/PICK UP?
Drop off is no more than 5 minutes prior to class. Pick up is promptly after class ends. Beach Ballet does not provide supervision for students before, after, or between classes.

WHAT IF I MISS A CLASS?
No problem! Students may attend another weekly class for a make-up. Check the schedule to see which class your child may attend. Tuition is not prorated for missed classes. We will have a monthly open class on Saturday mornings TBA.

ARE THERE PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES?
Yes, each session Beach Ballet students will have opportunity to perform. This includes performing at Hilltop Auditorium and community events.

ARE THERE COSTUME FEES?
Yes, costumes are a separate cost and can range from $40 to $90 per class. For some productions, there will be a costume rental fee. Miss Cheryl is very good at keeping parents updated on costumes and working with each class to make sure we are all happy with choices. If you have a talent for sewing, crafting, and building props, please let Miss Cheryl know.

I THINK MY CHILD IS MORE ADVANCED THAN THE REST OF HER CLASS
When your child is ready their teacher will move them up. We have a great deal of experience with placement and skill level. Your child may be more advanced in one area, but needing improvement in another. If you ever have any questions about how your child is doing, please leave a note and we will be happy to discuss your child’s progress.

MY CHILD DIDN’T GET MOVED UP WITH HER FRIEND
Some dance sessions they might be at the bottom of the class, or the top, or they may be right in the middle. One year they might look up to someone in the class, another year they might be the role model. No matter where they are placed, a lot of valuable things are being learned.

WHY CAN’T I STAY IN THE CLASSROOM TO WATCH MY CHILD DANCE
There is a very small sitting area where you can watch class. Although it’s a joy to watch your child dance, it can be distracting to all the students. Have you ever heard that your child behaves completely different for Grandma or the teacher then they do for you? When parents are in the room dancers seem to focus more on “Mommy” then they do themselves and their dance steps. We encourage you to be a part of parent participation week (once each session) to get a hands on experience of what the students are working on!

HOW DO I SCHEDULE MY CHILD FOR PRIVATE LESSONS? HOW MUCH ARE THEY?
Check with Miss Cheryl if you would like schedule a private lesson for your dancer. Rates are $25 for ½ Hour and $40 for One Hour. Students must be currently enrolled in a class at Beach Ballet to be eligible for a private lesson OR have made prior arrangements with Miss Cheryl.
